第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

                             A

Some people are lucky enough to be born with a good sense of direction and even if they have only visited a place once, they will be able to find it again years later.

I am one of those unfortunate people who have poor sense of direction and I may have visited a place time after time but I still get lost on my way there. When I was young I was so shy that I never dared ask complete strangers the way and so I used to wander round in circles and hope that by some chance I would get to the spot I was heading for.

I am no longer too shy to ask people for direction, but I often receive replies that puzzle me. Often people do not like to admit that they didn’t know their hometown and will insist on telling you the way, even if they do not know it; others, who are anxious to prove that they know their hometown very well, will give you a long list of directions which you can not possibly hope to remember, and still others do not seem to be able to tell between their left and their right and you find in the end that you are going in the opposite direction to that in which you should be going.

If anyone ever asks me the way to somewhere, I always tell them I am a stranger to the town in order to avoid giving them wrong direction but even this can have embarrassing results.

Once I was on my way to work when I was stopped by a man who asked me if I would direct him the way to the Sunlight Building. I gave my usual reply, but I had not walked on a few steps when I realized that he had asked for directions to my office building. However, at this point, I decided it was too late to turn back and search for him out of the crowd behind me as I was going to meet with someone at the office and I did not want to keep him waiting.

Imagine my embarrassment when my secretary showed in the very man who had asked for directions to my office and his astonishment when he recognized me as the person he had asked.

56. What is the writer going to do when someone asks him for direction?

       C. He will give the very person long list of direction.

       D. He is going to show the man an opposite direction.

57. Why did the writer consider himself to be an unlucky dog?

       A. Because of his poor sense of direction.

       B. Because he always forget the way to home.

       C. Because he did not have any friend.

       D. Because he used to be shy and dared not ask others the way.

       A. He felt strange.     B. He felt embarrassed.

       C. He felt very sad.    D. He felt astonished.

A. Someone we don’t know.

B. The writer did it for himself.

C. The secretary did so.

Time spent in a bookshop can be most enjoyable, whether you are a book-lover or only there to buy a book as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find a shelter from a sudden shower. Whatever the reason, you can soon be totally unaware(未意识到)of your surroundings. You soon become interested in some books or others, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent too much time there and have to rush off to keep some forgotten appointment.

This chance to escape the realities of everyday life is the main attraction(吸引)of a bookshop. A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can walk around such a place to your heart's content. If it is a good shop, no assistant will come up to you with the greeting "Can I help you?" You needn't buy anything you don't want. In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished reading. Then, and only then, are his services necessary.

Once a medical student had to read a textbook which was far too expensive for him to buy. He couldn't borrow it from the library and the only copy he could find was in a certain bookshop. Every afternoon, therefore, he would go along to the shop and read a little of the book at a time. One day, however, he was disappointed to find the book missing from his usual place. He was about to leave, when he noticed the owner of the shop beckoning to him. Expecting to be told off, he went towards him. To his surprise, the owner pointed to the book which was tucked away in a corner. "I put it there in case anyone tries to buy it !"He said, and left the delighted student continuing his reading.

64. According to the passage the main attraction of a bookshop is that ________.

A. people can learn something from books

D. it offers a chance to get free from realities

Co-operation means working together for the benefit of all. Without co-operation modern society could not exist. Co-operation is at its best among the farmers in the dry areas of certain parts of Australia and Africa. The fields have been irrigated (灌溉) in these areas. Crops cannot be grown without water. For this purpose, canals and reservoirs have been built. The canals have been cut through the fields of not only one farmer. Those who live higher up the valley than the others have permitted canals to be built through their land in order to carry water to the fields of farmers lower down. When there is a long period without rain, all share the water. Instead of taking all the water for themselves, the farmers in the higher land leave enough water for their neighbours down the valley. Farming in the dry areas has been made possible by such co-operation. By co-operation farmers have learned to make even the desert produce crops.

73. A reservoir is used to _______.

       A. keep the fields wet        B. store water

C. join canals                D. prevent farmers from getting water

74. In dry weather the farmers who live higher up the valley _______.

    A. share the water with their neighbours down the valley

    B. keep all the water for themselves

C. build canals across the fields of other farmers

D. work hard to store water

75. Crops can be produced in the desert only because ________.

A. there is a lot of rain

B. there is one reservoir

C. the people work together for the benefit of all
